Spring Show ‘n’ Shine event to rev up motoring enthusiasts

Ferrari Park in Laidley will be a ‘wheely’ good spot to admire some of the region’s flashiest cars and motorbikes next month, with more than 150 vehicles expected to roll into town for the annual Spring Show ‘n’ Shine car event.

Held as part of the Laidley Spring Festival on September 7, the event will feature a wide range of custom Hot Rods, American Muscle, and vintage models all vying to be crowned Supreme Car of the Show.

Following the success of last year’s show, which attracted thousands of people, Lockyer Valley Mayor Tanya Milligan said this year’s event would be bigger and better.

“I’m excited to announce that the Spring Show ‘n’ Shine event will be back this September with some cracker vehicles on display for the community to admire,” Cr Milligan said.

“Many of this year’s entrants are locals, but we will also have passionate car lovers who have travelled across Southeast Queensland to join us at the Festival Precinct to show off their pride and joy to other motoring enthusiasts.

“Not only will this be your opportunity to see these beautiful machines up close, but you can also help choose a winner by voting for your favourite car to win a trophy.

“Make sure you grab your People's Choice Award voting slip from the picnic hut, write down the details of the car or bike you liked best, and return it to the friendly staff to make your vote count!

“It’s going to be a really fun morning for kids and adults alike.”

Show categories include Top Holden, Top Ford, Top Mopar, Top Chevrolet, Top Australian, Top American, Top European, Top Pre 1972, Top Post 1972, Top Muscle, Top Motorbike, and Top Motorbike Mural.

Other awards include the People’s Choice and the Supreme Car of the Show.

After impressing the judges and winning the Supreme Car of the Show award in 2023, Gatton resident Glen Crimmins will once again be entering his 1974 GTS four-door Monaro 350 into the Show ‘n’ Shine event.

“It is one of 214 four-door Monaro’s ever produced, and I think it would have been one of the lucky last – it was made in October 1974 and that’s when production stopped,” Glen said.

“It is a sunburnt gold and still has its original motor and everything.

“I have a lot of love and respect for the old cars because they don’t make them like they used to.

“Come on down and have a look at all the magnificent cars and enjoy the spirit of motoring.

“We are all very happy to talk about our cars – we could do that every day!”

Council has once again partnered with Southern Cross Charities for the organisation and delivery of this event, with proceeds from the event being donated to the Laidley Baptist Church.

Barbara Quinn from Southern Cross Charities said the money would help some of the region’s most vulnerable people.

“The Show ‘n’ Shine event is free for families to attend, but if you would like to show off your car, we do ask for a donation,” Barbara said.

“It can be as little or as much as you like, with all the money being donated to the Laidley Baptist Church to help with several of their community initiatives including the warm blanket appeal, free breakfasts for local school kids, and the hot meal program.

“It’s wonderful that an event like this can bring the community together, and in turn give back to others as well.

“It is going to be a fun morning, so if you haven’t entered your car yet, there is still time.

“It would be the perfect event for car clubs to be involved in.”

The Laidley Spring Show ‘n’ Shine will be held from 9am-1pm, with the trophy winners being announced at 12.30pm.

A grand exit featuring all the cars and bikes will be held at 1pm, with the best vantage point being along Whites Road to watch them rev their engines and head home.

The Laidley Spring Festival is supported by the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland.

The event is also made possible thanks to the Lockyer Valley Regional Council, Kambu Health, Urban Utilities, Pohlmans Nursery, Australian Organic Farmers, The Lockyer & Somerset Independent, and River 94.9.
